About your trip

The journey begins with a scenic drive from La Paz, ascending through winding mountain roads that offer spectacular views of the city below. As you climb higher, the landscape gradually changes, transitioning from the urban sprawl of La Paz to rugged Andean terrain. Along the way, travelers may spot llamas, alpacas, and Andean condors soaring above the cliffs. The dramatic change in altitude can be felt, and guides typically recommend taking it slow, staying hydrated, and acclimatizing properly to avoid altitude sickness.

Upon arrival at Chacaltaya’s abandoned ski lodge, visitors are greeted by a surreal and breathtaking landscape. Once a thriving ski resort, Chacaltaya was home to the highest ski lift in the world. However, due to climate change, the Chacaltaya Glacier has almost completely melted, leaving behind only remnants of snow in the coldest months. While skiing is no longer possible, the area remains a popular destination for hikers and photographers seeking one of the best viewpoints in the Andes.

From the lodge, an optional short but challenging trek leads to the summit of Chacaltaya, where travelers can take in a 360-degree view of the Andean peaks. On a clear day, visitors can see the majestic Huayna Potosí (6,088 meters / 19,974 feet), the sprawling Altiplano, and even Lake Titicaca in the distance. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching this altitude is unparalleled, making it a highlight of the tour.

The extreme altitude and cold temperatures make warm clothing essential, as strong winds and rapidly changing weather conditions can be expected. Despite the chilly climate, the serene beauty of the snow-dusted peaks and the crisp mountain air make for an unforgettable experience.

After spending time at the summit, travelers descend back to the lodge to warm up before heading back to La Paz. Some tours may include an optional stop at the Valley of the Moon or another nearby attraction, providing an additional opportunity to explore Bolivia’s unique landscapes.

A Chacaltaya tour is more than just a visit to a mountain—it’s an adventure to one of the highest accessible points on Earth, offering a combination of history, breathtaking views, and the thrill of high-altitude exploration. Whether you’re seeking a physical challenge or simply a chance to witness the grandeur of the Andes, Chacaltaya is a must-visit destination for those traveling through Bolivia.
